What Feelings Does Selank Evoke?
Most people using Selank describe its action as a state of greater mental calm, reduced tension, and better stress management abilities, rather than a feeling of sedation or euphoria. Human studies have shown that Selank induces anxiolytic effects while also exhibiting anti-fatigue and mild psychostimulant properties. This suggests that in some individuals, it may improve clarity of thought and reduce mental fatigue while simultaneously alleviating anxiety [1].
Unlike traditional sedatives, Selank generally does not cause significant drowsiness or cognitive impairment. Subjective feelings are often described as „calm alertness”—a state between relaxation and maintaining full concentration [1,2].
Does Selank work immediately?
Selank does not appear to act immediately in the same way as fast-acting benzodiazepines. Some individuals report feeling calmer shortly after administration, particularly with intranasal formulations, however, controlled studies suggest its effects may develop gradually with repeated administration [1,2].
Experimental data indicate that Selank affects neurotransmitter systems, gene expression, and neurotrophic pathways. These are biological processes that likely occur gradually, not instantaneously [2,3].
Does Selank Cause a „High”?
Currently, there is no evidence to suggest that Selank causes euphoria, intoxication, or a psychoactive „high.” In human studies, Selank is described as a peptide with anxiolytic and cognitive-enhancing properties, not as a recreational substance [1].
Available data also suggest that Selank does not exhibit many characteristics typical of substances of abuse, such as strong sedation, dependence, or intoxication [1,2].
Is Selank Dangerous?
Current research suggests that Selank exhibits a favorable safety profile in both animal and human studies. Clinical trials generally indicate good tolerability and a lack of many adverse effects typical of conventional anxiolytic drugs [1].
However, it should be emphasized that human data remain limited, and long-term safety studies have not yet been conducted. While current evidence does not indicate significant risks, further research is needed to draw definitive conclusions.
Is Selank effective?
Published human studies suggest that Selank may be effective in alleviating symptoms associated with anxiety and stress. In a randomized study conducted on patients with generalized anxiety disorder and neurasthenia, Selank demonstrated anxiolytic effects comparable to medazepam, while simultaneously reducing feelings of fatigue and mental weakness [1].
Animal studies further confirm its anxiolytic profile through mechanisms related to GABA receptor modulation, regulation of enkephalin metabolism, and influence on neurotrophic pathways [2,4].
Can Selank be used daily?
In several clinical trials, Selank was administered repeatedly over specific treatment periods and was well tolerated [1]. However, there are currently no long-term clinical trials that determine the optimal daily dosing regimen or evaluate the effects of long-term, continuous administration.
Due to limited data, the ideal duration or frequency of daily use cannot currently be determined.
Can Selank be used on an as-needed basis?
Selank’s anxiolytic properties lead some people to consider using it during periods of increased stress or anxiety. However, controlled studies have primarily evaluated regimens involving repeated administration, rather than occasional or „as-needed” use [1].
Therefore, though occasional use may be theoretically possible, current research is lacking to determine if it yields comparable effects to regular administration.
Can Selank Be Administered via Injection?
Yes. Selank can be prepared for administration by injection, and injectable formulations are available from some peptide suppliers. However, most of the scientific literature pertains to Selank administered intranasally, rather than by injection [2,3].
Currently, there are no robust clinical studies directly comparing Selank administered by injection and intranasally, nor is there any evidence indicating that one route of administration is superior to the other.
How is Selank Administered?
Most published studies administered Selank intranasally. This route of administration was chosen because it may facilitate the peptide’s delivery to the central nervous system via the olfactory and trigeminal pathways, while avoiding degradation in the gastrointestinal tract [2,3].
Although injectable formulations are also available, intranasal administration remains the most thoroughly studied method and currently has the strongest scientific evidence supporting it.
Does Selank Nasal Spray Work?
Most of the evidence supporting Selank’s biological activity comes from studies involving intranasal administration. Studies in humans and animals have demonstrated effects on anxiety, neurochemical regulation, gene expression, and the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) following intranasal administration [1–3].
Although additional large-scale clinical trials are still needed, the intranasal form of Selank currently has the most scientific data supporting its biological activity.
Does Selank affect libido?
Currently, there are no clinical trials that directly assess the impact of Selank on sexual function or libido.
Because anxiety and chronic stress can negatively affect sexual well-being, some people may experience an indirect improvement in their libido if their anxiety symptoms are reduced. However, there is no evidence that Selank directly increases or decreases libido.
Does Selank lower inhibitions?
Selank has anxiolytic effects without causing significant sedation or impairment of cognitive function, which are often observed with many traditional anxiolytics [1].
Currently, there is no evidence to suggest that Selank causes disinhibition, impulsivity, or behavioral disturbances similar to those observed after alcohol consumption or the use of certain sedatives.
Does Selank work like Diazepam?
Human studies have shown that Selank's anxiolytic efficacy was comparable to medazepam, which belongs to the benzodiazepine group [1]. At the same time, researchers noted that Selank exhibited anti-fatigue and mildly psychostimulant properties and did not cause many of the sedative effects typical of benzodiazepines.
Therefore, although Selank may reduce anxiety comparably to diazepam in some individuals, the subjective experiences after its use appear to be different.
Does Selank work like a benzodiazepine?
Not entirely. Although Selank affects GABAergic signaling and exhibits anxiolytic effects, its effects differ from those of traditional benzodiazepines [2].
Current evidence suggests that Selank may alleviate anxiety while causing less sedation, muscle relaxation, and cognitive impairment than classical benzodiazepines.
What can Selank help with?
The strongest scientific evidence concerns Selank's potential role in reducing anxiety and modulating stress responses. Studies also suggest possible benefits related to cognitive functions, neuroprotection, BDNF regulation, and broader modulation of neurochemical processes [1–4].
However, many of these potential applications remain in the research phase and require larger clinical trials.
Is Selank a nootropic?
Selank is often classified as a nootropic peptide, as experimental studies suggest it may have an impact on cognitive function, neuroplasticity, and stress resistance [2,3].
Unlike traditional nootropics, which primarily focus on improving attention or memory, Selank's cognitive effects may stem indirectly from its anxiolytic and neuroregulatory actions.
Is Selank a peptide?
Yes. Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide composed of seven amino acids with the sequence:
Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro (TKPRPGP) [5].
It was developed as a tuftsin peptide analog and is being investigated for anxiolytic, neuroregulatory, and immunomodulatory properties.
