CJC-1295 and ipamorelin and hair growth - do they help or cause hair loss?

IGF-1, a hormone that CJC-1295 and ipamorelin increase, has a real and well-documented role in hair follicle biology. This comes from general dermatological research. However, no study has specifically tested CJC-1295 or ipamorelin for hair growth or hair loss in humans. Any claim in either direction – positive or negative – is therefore currently a likely extension of hair biology science, rather than a directly confirmed effect of these two peptides.

Do CJC-1295 and ipamorelin help with hair growth?

There is a legitimate, well-established scientific basis linking IGF-1 to hair follicle health. It's worth clarifying this upfront before discussing what it does and does not specifically mean for CJC-1295 and ipamorelin. A 2025 scientific review, focusing on IGF-1's role in hair regeneration, described something interesting. IGF-1 is naturally produced by dermal papilla cells – specialized cells at the base of every hair follicle. It plays a documented role in prolonging the active growth phase of the hair cycle, known as anagen. It also supports the creation of blood vessels around the follicle, helping to deliver nutrients [1]. This same review noted that IGF-1 signaling is an important regulator of hair follicle growth and tissue repair. Reduced IGF-1 activity has been linked to conditions such as androgenetic alopecia. Dermal papilla cells from balding scalp areas have been shown to secrete measurably less IGF-1 than cells from non-balding areas [1].

Animal studies in the same literature provide additional support. Injecting IGF-1 directly into the skin of mice increased hair follicle number and lengthened the hair growth phase. This supports the biological plausibility of IGF-1’s relationship to hair growth mechanistically [1]. However, it is important to be precise about what this evidence shows and does not show. These studies establish that IGF-1 itself plays a significant role in hair follicle biology. However, they come largely from animal studies, local or topical applications, and observational comparisons of human tissues. None of them involve CJC-1295 or ipamorelin. No study has tested whether systemically raising IGF-1—throughout the body, via peptide injection—through these specific compounds yields any measurable effect on human hair growth.

This distinction is significant. A topically applied or directly injected growth factor acting on skin tissue is pharmacologically distinct from systemic circulating IGF-1 growth that follows growth hormone stimulation elsewhere in the body.

Do CJC-1295 and ipamorelin cause hair loss?

Just as there is no direct evidence that CJC-1295 or ipamorelin promote hair growth, there are no published studies showing that these compounds cause hair loss. In fact, the existing science on hair and IGF-1 points in the opposite theoretical direction than concern about hair loss. Decreased, not increased, IGF-1 has been linked to poorer hair follicle health in the dermatological literature discussed above [1]. However, one should approach anecdotal reports of hair loss circulating in online communities surrounding these peptides with caution. Correlation.

Since no controlled studies have tracked hair outcomes in individuals using CJC-1295 or ipamorelin, this article cannot confirm or deny the risk of hair loss. Claims in either direction found in informal online discussions should be treated as anecdotal rather than scientifically established.

The connection between CJC-1295 and Ipamorelin with hair and IGF-1

The main scientific connection linking these peptides to hair growth in general is indirect. It is mediated through a common hormone, IGF-1. CJC-1295 and ipamorelin raise growth hormone, which in turn raises IGF-1 [2], [3]. It is independently known that IGF-1 plays a significant role in the hair growth cycle [1]. This creates a scientifically plausible hypothesis worth treating seriously as a hypothesis. Raising systemic IGF-1 could theoretically support hair follicle health. However, this remains exactly that: a hypothesis. It is constructed by combining two separate sets of research—the hormonal effects of CJC-1295 and ipamorelin, and the role of IGF-1 in hair biology. It is not a finding demonstrated by any single study that has tested the actual compounds on actual hair outcomes.

It's also worth noting something about the supporting research itself. Most studies on hair and IGF-1 involve either animal models, local or topical application of IGF-1 directly to the skin, or observations comparing tissue from balding versus non-balding areas. None of these represent the same experimental setup as measuring whether systemic IGF-1 increase from a growth hormone-releasing peptide injection would significantly alter hair growth in a living person over time.

Given this evidentiary gap, any „before and after” claims regarding hair growth attributed to CJC-1295 or ipamorelin circulating in marketing or informal contexts are not supported by direct research. They should be treated with appropriate skepticism.

Limitations of current evidence

The link between hair and IGF-1 is rooted in genuine, peer-reviewed dermatological science. However, these studies were conducted independently of CJC-1295 and ipamorelin. They used different research models—animal studies, topical skin application, and observational tissue comparisons—rather than systemic peptide administration in humans.

No studies identified in the literature reviewed for this article have directly tested CJC-1295 or ipamorelin for hair growth or hair loss outcomes. This means that both potential benefit and potential harm remain unconfirmed, theoretical possibilities rather than established facts.
