Does Selank Cause Withdrawal Symptoms and Is It Detected in Drug Tests?

Withdrawal Symptoms after Selank: What Does Research Say?

One of the most frequently asked questions regarding substances affecting mood, anxiety, or cognitive function is whether discontinuing them can cause withdrawal symptoms or lead to dependence. Based on the currently available scientific data, there is no evidence to suggest that Selank causes physical dependence or a withdrawal syndrome characteristic of benzodiazepines, opioids, or other addictive psychoactive substances [1–4].

Selank was originally developed as an anxiolytic peptide and has been extensively researched for its effects on anxiety, stress regulation, and cognitive function. Unlike many conventional anti-anxiety medications, Selank appears to act as a regulatory neuropeptide rather than by directly stimulating or inhibiting the central nervous system [1].

Experimental studies suggest that Selank primarily acts by modulating GABAergic signalling, endogenous opioid peptides such as enkephalins, and neuroplasticity-related pathways [1,2]. These mechanisms differ significantly from those of benzodiazepines, which bind directly to the benzodiazepine sites of GABA-A receptors and are well known to induce tolerance and withdrawal symptoms after prolonged use.

Does Selank cause addiction?

Current scientific data does not indicate that Selank has addictive properties.

In clinical trials with patients suffering from generalised anxiety disorder and neurasthenia, Selank was shown to reduce the severity of anxiety and improve their mental state, with no signs of dependence, abuse, or withdrawal symptoms [3]. Researchers also observed psychostimulant and anti-asthenic effects without any clear sedative effect, which often accompanies substances that can lead to dependence.

Further support comes from animal studies. Selank, when used in conjunction with benzodiazepines, has been shown to enhance their anxiolytic effects while reducing their sedative and muscle-relaxant effects [4]. These findings suggest that Selank behaves differently from traditional sedatives and possesses a unique neuropharmacological profile.

Can stopping Selank cause withdrawal symptoms?

Currently, no published studies have described a clinically significant withdrawal syndrome following discontinuation of Selank.

In the scientific literature, there have also been no reported cases of rebound anxiety, physical dependence, compulsive use, or the need for dose escalation [1–4].

However, a lack of evidence must be distinguished from evidence that withdrawal symptoms can never occur. Because long-term human studies are still limited, researchers cannot completely rule out the possibility that some individuals may experience changes in subjective well-being after discontinuing Selank.

For example, a person who experienced reduced anxiety while using any intervention may notice a return of their previous symptoms after it ends. This situation does not necessarily indicate withdrawal symptoms and may simply reflect a relapse of the original problem that had previously improved.

Why does Selank appear to have low addictive potential?

Several features may explain Selank's seemingly low addictive potential.

Firstly, Selank appears to regulate neurotransmitter systems, rather than causing sharp increases in neurochemicals associated with the reward pathway, which often contribute to the development of addiction.

Secondly, current data indicate that Selank does not cause pronounced sedation, euphoria, intoxication, or cognitive impairment, features often associated with substances with a high potential for abuse [1,3].

Thirdly, Selank appears to act by modulating natural biological systems, including GABA receptor activity, enkephalin metabolism, and neuroplasticity pathways, which may promote emotional balance without causing significant disruption to brain chemistry [1–3].

Current Scientific Findings

Based on available human and animal studies, Selank does not appear to be an addictive substance, and it has not been shown to cause a clinically recognisable withdrawal syndrome [1–4]. Nevertheless, further long-term studies are needed to better assess its safety profile, particularly regarding prolonged use and after cessation of its use.

Is Selank detected in drug tests?

Can Selank give a positive drug test result?

Another frequently asked question is whether Selank can cause a positive result in drug tests performed in the workplace, in sports, by law enforcement agencies, or in forensic medicine.

According to currently available data, Selank is not known to cause positive results in standard screening tests.

Most routine drug tests are designed to detect specific substances or their metabolites, including amphetamines, cocaine metabolites, cannabinoids, opiates, benzodiazepines, phencyclidine (PCP), and certain synthetic drugs.

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide built from seven naturally occurring amino acids arranged in the sequence Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro (TKPRPGP) [5].

As its structure is not related to compounds commonly screened for in routine toxicology studies, there is currently no evidence to suggest that Selank causes false positives for the most frequently tested substances.

Does Selank look like a benzodiazepine in drug tests?

There is no evidence to suggest that Selank causes positive benzodiazepine tests.

This question arises often, as Selank exhibits anxiolytic properties and affects GABA-ergic signalling. However, mechanistic studies show that Selank functions differently than benzodiazepines [1]. While it modulates GABA receptor activity through positive allosteric modulation, its interactions appear to differ from classic binding to the benzodiazepine sites.

Furthermore, animal studies have shown that Selank can modify the effects of diazepam and other psychoactive substances in a way that goes beyond simple summation of effects, which further confirms its unique pharmacological profile [1,4].

Can Specialist Laboratories Detect Selank?

Although Selank is not known for appearing in routine drug tests, this does not mean its detection is impossible.

Theoretically, specialised analytical techniques such as liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS) could potentially identify peptide compounds if research protocols were specifically designed for their detection. However, these types of tests are highly specialised and differ significantly from standard tests performed in workplaces, clinics, or during routine screenings.

Currently, there are no published studies indicating that Selank is routinely included in conventional toxicological panels.

Does Selank affect doping tests?

Available literature does not provide evidence that Selank routinely causes positive results in standard doping tests. However, it should be noted that anti-doping organisations regularly update their lists of prohibited substances and testing procedures.

For this reason, individuals participating in elite sport should always check the current regulations of their sports organisation, rather than assuming all peptides are automatically permitted.

Current Scientific Findings

Based on currently available data, Selank is not known to cause positive results on routine drug tests, as it is a synthetic heptapeptide with a structure different from substances commonly included in standard screening panels [1,5]. Nevertheless, specialised analytical methods could theoretically detect peptide compounds if research protocols were specifically developed for this purpose.
