Does Selank Help with Anxiety?
Current research suggests that Selank may support anxiety regulation and stress resilience. Selank (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) is a synthetic peptide derived from the naturally occurring immune peptide tuftsin. It was developed in Russia for research into anxiety disorders, stress responses, and emotional regulation [1–5].
Unlike traditional anxiolytic drugs that primarily act through benzodiazepine receptors, Selank appears to simultaneously affect several biological systems. Research indicates that it may interact with GABA signaling, endogenous opioid peptides called enkephalins, neurotrophic factors, and immunological pathways related to stress response and emotional balance [1–4]. More and more people are looking for information about Selank for anxiety, as research suggests that this peptide may influence mechanisms related to the stress response, emotional regulation, and nervous system function.

Research on Selank in the Context of Anxiety
Several studies have focused directly on the potential anxiolytic effect of Selank.
One of the first mechanistic studies showed that Selank inhibits enzymes responsible for the breakdown of enkephalins. These naturally occurring neuropeptides play an important role in mood regulation, stress adaptation, and emotional processing. Researchers suggested that preserving enkephalin activity may contribute to Selank's anxiolytic effects, as disturbances in enkephalin metabolism have been observed in individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) [2].
Additional laboratory studies have shown that Selank acts as a positive allosteric modulator of GABA receptors. Instead of directly activating GABA receptors, as benzodiazepines do, Selank influences GABA signaling in a more indirect way. This mechanism may explain its anxiolytic effects while limiting the sedation often observed with traditional anxiolytics [1].
Similar results were obtained in animal studies. Long-term administration of the peptide TP-7, an analog of Selank, significantly reduced anxiety-related behaviors in rats throughout the entire four-week study period, without affecting body weight or general activity of the animals [6].
Selank for Anxiety in Human Studies
Clinical trials of Selank have been conducted mainly in Russia, particularly in patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and neurasthenia.
In a randomized clinical trial involving 62 patients, researchers directly compared Selank with medazepam, a benzodiazepine medication. Both therapies led to a comparable reduction in anxiety symptoms. Simultaneously, Selank exhibited anti-asthenic and mild psychostimulant effects, suggesting the possibility of reducing anxiety while maintaining alertness and mental performance, rather than inducing drowsiness [3].
Scientists also observed an improvement in markers related to enkephalin activity during therapy, which further supports the proposed mechanism of action of Selank [3].
These findings are particularly interesting because many classic anti-anxiety drugs can cause drowsiness, cognitive impairment, the development of tolerance, or withdrawal symptoms. Available data suggest that Selank acts through different neurochemical pathways.
Is Selank effective for anxiety?
Current scientific evidence suggests that Selank may have beneficial effects on anxiety-related symptoms, particularly those associated with chronic stress and generalized anxiety disorder.
Both animal and clinical studies have consistently shown anxiolytic effects, and mechanistic studies have identified several biological pathways that may be responsible for the observed effects [1–6].
Research suggests that Selank may affect anxiety through:
- modulation of GABA receptor activity,
- inhibition of enkephalin degradation,
- regulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF),
- The impact on neurotransmitter systems involved in emotion regulation.,

Although these results are promising, most clinical trials have been relatively small, and larger, modern trials are needed to better determine long-term efficacy and safety.
What feelings can Selank cause?
Scientific research does not directly measure subjective feelings like „how Selank works,” but published results do provide some clues.
Clinical studies observed a reduction in anxiety symptoms, decreased mental fatigue, lowered emotional tension, and improved overall functioning [3]. Animal studies also showed a limitation of anxious behaviors without a clear sedative effect [6].
For this reason, Selank is often described in scientific literature as a peptide that provides a calming and anxiolytic effect while maintaining mental acuity and alertness. This profile differs from many classic anxiolytics, which often induce pronounced sedation [1–3].
Does Selank work similarly to Diazepam?
Current data suggest that Selank and diazepam reduce anxiety through entirely different mechanisms.
Diazepam acts by directly binding to benzodiazepine sites on GABA-A receptors, producing anxiolytic, sedative, muscle relaxant, and anticonvulsant effects. Sedation is a typical effect of this mechanism.
Selank, on the other hand, appears to indirectly influence GABA signaling, while also interacting with enkephalins, neurotrophic factors, and immunological pathways [1,2]. Experimental studies suggest that it may retain anxiolytic effects while limiting some of the sedative effects typical of benzodiazepines [4].
Although both compounds exhibit anxiolytic properties, available evidence indicates that Selank is not a diazepam equivalent and possesses a different pharmacological profile.
Does Selank work like a benzodiazepine?
Research suggests that Selank should not be classified as a traditional benzodiazepine.
In animal studies, Selank has been shown to enhance the anxiolytic effects of certain benzodiazepines while limiting their sedative and muscle-relaxant effects. Researchers also observed that Selank counteracted the reduction in motor activity induced by diazepam and olanzapine, further highlighting its distinct mechanism of action [4].
In addition, molecular studies indicate that Selank affects the GABAergic system in a different way than direct activation of benzodiazepine receptors [1].
For this reason, Selank is usually classified as a peptide with anxiolytic action and a unique biological profile, rather than as a benzodiazepine-like substance.
